First responders from the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company and other surrounding agencies were called at around 8:15 p.m. on Nov. 6 to a home on Woodhome Drive when a neighbor called 911 to report a vehicle that struck the home.
According to the Maryland Fire Marshal, the vehicle struck a gas meter after crashing into the home, which sparked a fire in the van that spread into the home.
The driver initially led the scene, though the Harford County Sheriff's Office was later able to identify him. The homeowner was not inside at the time.
One dog perished at the scene, and a second died after being rescued and treated at the scene by firefighters. No other injuries were reported.
The fire led to multiple evacuations in the neighborhood as a precaution due to the gas leak, though the residents were later able to return home once BGE crws isolated the leak.
It caused an estimated $650,000 in damage.
